"Dear Citizens of Austin,
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has had great success since our founding in 1980 in reducing the number of drunk driving fatalities. Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go, with nearly 3,000 people driving drunk every single day. In 2014 right here in Texas, there were 1,446 drunk driving deaths representing 41 percent of all total traffic deaths.
While the best way to stop drunk driving is to couple strong drunk driving laws with strong DUI enforcement and educating the public on the consequences of breaking these laws, it is also imperative for those over the age of 21 to have access to a safe ride home should they go out and consume alcoholic beverages.
To that end, MADD supports ridesharing platforms like Uber and Lyft which are providing a safe alternative to driving under the influence to millions of people in hundreds of countries around the world. By providing our communities with an alternative - like ridesharing - to get home safely after a night out on the town, we’re confident DUI arrests, and drunk-driving related crashes can be lowered in Austin.
I urge you to consider the positive impact ridesharing will have on keeping the Austin community safe.
