City Meeting For Proposed Bike Lane Improvements to Duval St

The City is planning a public engagement meeting to discuss proposed changes to Duval Street between San Jacinto (UT Campus) and 53rd Street. The proposed changes include the installation of protected/dedicated bike lanes (what is known as an all ages and abilities bicycle route) and the elimination of street parking on both sides of Duval between San Jacinto and 50th Street and one side of Duval between 50th and 53rd Streets. Duval St is one of the busiest bicycle corridors in the city with bicycles making up 9% of all traffic. The city notice has been attached for further information.

An open house hosted by the City of Austin Transportation Department will be held on November 16th between 6 and 7pm at the Ridgetop Elementary Library.

Update: Duval Street (San Jacinto Boulevard to 53rd Street) - Proposed Street Improvements2

Thank you for attending the open house for proposed street improvements on Duval Street between San Jacinto Boulevard and 53rd Street or providing Austin Transportation Department (ATD) your feedback by phone or email.

Since the open house on November 16th, 2017, we have been working through all of the comments we received to determine any necessary changes to the initial project proposal. Based on this feedback, ATD has made the following changes to the project:

  • Parking will be allowed on the east side of the street between 6:00 pm and 7:00 am from 51st Street to 53rd Street (existing No Parking zones to remain).

  • Buffered bicycle lanes will be installed south of 50th Street to San Jacinto Boulevard and parking will be prohibited on both sides of the street within these limits.

  • Physical protection of the bikeway is no longer being considered on Duval Street at this time.

  • Enhanced pedestrian crossing treatments will be implemented at Harris Avenue, 41st Street, and 43rd Street.

ATD will be implementing this project in two phases:

Phase 1 will include:

  • Modifications to parking restrictions on Duval Street south of 53rd Street to San Jacinto Boulevard

  • Installation of northbound bicycle lanes between 51st Street and 53rd Street

Phase 2 will include:

  • Installation of painted buffers added to bicycle lanes south of 50th Street

  • Modifications to striping near signalized intersections

  • Installation of a northbound bicycle lane between 50th Street and 51st Street

  • Installation of southbound bicycle lanes between 51st Street and 53rd Street

  • Construction of a shared use path along the northbound approach to 45th Street

  • Enhanced pedestrian crossing treatments at Harris Avenue, 41st Street, and 43rd Street

Phase 1 is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Phase 2 is expected to begin later this year.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments and thank you for your feedback.
