:FAN: 2016 Board Nominations

When I filled out the Google form I was able to see that someone else has submitted from D7, but I don’t see his name listed above.

The form shouldn’t tell you anything about anyone else, unless you’re in the spreadsheet or have already filled out the form yourself and looking at the summary of answers. You’re possibly looking at your own answers otherwise.

Also, people can choose multiple positions to run for at this point within the form. So there may be some overlap there.

I see that Chip Harris has filled out the online form but I don’t see any member of Friends of Austin Neighborhoods in our databases. You’ll have to sign up to become a candidate, Chip.

Anyone can join our ranks who is willing to champion our vision, and then apply as a candidate for the board.

Just mosey on over to atxfriends.org 's membership page.

I would like to make another nomination for Director: @jessicareneecast (Jessica Castilleja). She joined FAN after reaching out to us about working with Worker’s Defense Project’s Better Builder Program. @Kristen_A_Fox, @brwittstruck, and I met with her in person to learn about her involvement in that program. Jessica also lives in City Council District 5 which is not represented within our current board.

Thanks for doing so much legwork to getting people involved, @NatalieGauldin!

I have an open motion for Jessica on the floor.

We only have a few candidates who’ve filled out their bios so far.
It’s not necessary, but we’ll be sending these out as part of the Annual Meeting Agenda, which is required to go out 72 hours prior, that makes a deadline of Sunday the 26th.

And for anyone wanting to see how we operate or talk to any of us in person, feel free to come by our Board Meeting on Tuesday:

I move to officially nominate this list of candidates. Who will second the nominations?

I second the motion to nominate Jessica.

Thanks for the input!
I just updated the running list in the original post, and I’ll paste it here for posterity as well so far:

Candidates currently put forth by the Nominating Committee include:

  • Alysha Haggerton
  • Roger Cauvin
  • Skylar Buffington
  • Pete Gilcrease
  • Evan Gill
  • Philip Wiley
  • Brittany Morrison
  • Matt Armstrong
  • Jessica Castilleja

And we are awaiting bios from the following if they’d like that info to be included in the Annual Meeting Agenda:
@cevangill, @Phil_Wiley, @jessicareneecast

I’ve also added into that original post, a link to a Google Doc where we’ve put together an outline of the offerings our Board Members can make to help grow the organization if anyone is curious about how specifically they can get involved.

@alyshalynn, if it is not too late for nominations, and if @Meghan_Elizabeth, is willing, I would like to nominate her for a Director - At Large role. @brwittstruck nominated her last election, what caught my attention was her educational background and her profession - she was essentially a “CodeNEXT” specialist applying to help FAN in it’s pursuit to help implement Imagine Austin. In addition, she has as impressive a profile of any applicant to date related to broadening representation. Below is from the fall election cycle:

Meghan Skornia
Associate, Code Studio
28-year old renter and ADU dweller
Swede Hill, District 1
Lives w/ partner and dog

I work on urban planning and zoning projects of all scales, my current work includes the Los Angeles zoning code rewrite (recode:LA), a form-based code for Chattanooga and the Asheville River Arts District, corridor zoning for Berry Street in Fort Worth and new residential floating zones for Encinitas, CA.

It’s definitely not too late. We’ll even be taking nominations from the “floor” of the online meeting up until we start online voting. The point of this process is mostly to get a list of candidates to publish in the Annual Meeting Agenda.

Can I get a complete motion to add Meghan to the list of nominees?

@alyshalynn , please remove my name from the candidate list for the upcoming FAN Board election, we have an incredibly strong group of nominees, and, after much reflection, I can better serve the cause over the next year focusing on:

(1) strengthening the member NA I represent as a FAN delegate (Judges Hill Community Circle),
(2) strengthening the partnership between FAN delegates and FAN Board through the Assembly of Delegates,
(3) becoming another voice to champion areas where some local government policy should perhaps be re-evaluated in light of it’s impact on “affordability”.

For delegates informing members of FAN initiatives, it would be helpful to know-

=who is running for each of the FAN Officer / Director roles,
=who is running as (new demographic) a member NA representative (aka - delegate - two are allowed on the Board from any member NA). Ensuring a strong level of participation from this group is consistent with the bylaws intent, so would appreciate also knowing how the current Board members fit this demographic and all others as we look for broad representation
=who is running that represents a demographic not represented. Pete is the only one I think would provide first time ethic minority group representation - as a Native American. Skylar the only one I think would provide first time LGBT representation - given their FAN contributions to date nobody should question either’s candidacy as token.

Thank you for considering each of the above!

The Google Form, linked in the original post here is exactly where we’re gathering that demographic information if candidates want to offer it up, as well as which positions they’d be in the running for.

We’ll publish the list of nominees and the answers to the form for those that have filled it out in the Agenda for the Annual Meeeting and before voting begins.

I second the nomination of Meghan Skornia.

I’ll totally second Matt’s nomination for your board. I hope he’s as successful as he was in Crestview.

Well darn, was I really 1 vote short? Oh well! It’s probably for the best.

I didn’t make it last time I ran. I hear it’s always better to get elected the second time around. =)

@skylar_buffington, it’s safe to say you can declare a victory of sorts! your bio says “hesitant to over commit” due to involvement in another non-profit start up - yet most groups still voted for you because of all they have seen you do for the cause!!! That’s a lot of love :purple_heart:

You had plenty of voters supporting you, it’s just that two of them were registered on the Secretary line instead of Director line, and others, like myself, were hoping you will run again when you have more time.

Indeed, I will! I’ve been busy working on this thing that I shouldn’t really announce yet.
